Project Tools
The tools that were produced in the course of the Mt Lofty EMS project and which are now made available for use by others are as follows:
VERA Risk Tool and “Environmental Management Guidelines”
“How to develop an EMS” Guide
In addition, various outputs from the project (such as posters and newsletters) are also available to be downloaded.
VERA Risk Tool
VERA Risk Tool stands for Viticare Environmental Risk Assessment Tool. This tool is useful in identifying and measuring the risk of various factors that affect the environment. Such factors include:
- water use management
- chemical and pest management
- soil and fertilizer management
- machinery and vehicle management
- waste management.
Additionally, the Vera Risk Tool helps to pin-point the direction of the vineyard establishment as well as locating buildings, and growing the grapes.
Materials that could cause a risk include: chemicals and organic pesticides, fertilizers as well as mal-conducted or sourced irrigation. Other risks that are measured by this tool include those posed by a variety of vehicles (tractors, cars, harvesters, etc.), fuel storage locations and handling methods, air conditioners, and many other operative machinery.

Environmental Guidelines Tool
These guidelines were developed by DPI Victoria as part of their Code of Best Practice for Viticulture – Sunraysia Region, and they will provide growers with valuable environmental management options.
The guidelines can also be used as the basis of developing a regionally relevant self-assessment tool for growers as an entry-level option to formal environmental management.
Hence these guidelines provide a tool whereby growers may ensure that their practices align with the expectations of key external stakeholders, as well as identify the areas of potential improvement in their current management practices.
This document would best used in the planning phase of an EMS, to help with understanding and prioritising issues, then developing action plans relevant to individual properties. The guidelines can also be used as the basis of developing a regionally-relevant self assessment tool for growers as an entry-level option to formal environmental management.

A newsletter was released (approximately) every four to five months during the project to give basic information about the project, report on activities during the previous six months, profile participants and outline future activities. Each of the 6 posters produced can be downloaded here.
